Developing an Attachment to God
Sharing at Stanford FCA
After 28 years, I had the chance to return to my alma mater and share what I wish I could tell my younger self.
- What's the point of following Jesus, especially for a graduating Stanford student who will ostensibly "have it all"?
- How Jesus defines spiritual maturity
- How to hear His voice and walk in conversational intimacy with Jesus

One
This ministry is the best I have found in learning to hear God's voice. Not only hearing His voice, but moving towards moment-by-moment two-way, conversational intimacy. I don't think anyone else makes it more practical.
- 7 Day Devotional - A great place to start. Short videos starting you on the journey to hear His voice
- 49-Day Devotional - Longer devotional on hearing His voice
- Prayer Appointment - In these 1-2 hour personal appointments, trained facilitators guide you in conversation with Jesus. I like to call it therapy, but Jesus is the therapist. Complimentary but donations appreciated.
- Weekly practice - one hour call to practice hearing God's voice in a safe environment
- Checkout the site for more resources, like weekly prayer calls, online courses on Oneness with Jesus, in-person retreats, etc. Transformative and connect with great community.
Its about Ginoskos
"And on that day, I will say, away from me, I never "ginoskos"
"Mary said to the Angel, "How can I be pregnant, I've never ginoskos a man"
Our words in English for our relationship with Jesus have become burdened with religious meanings and often insufficiently describe the relationship Jesus desires to have with us.
Dallas Willard proposed a new definition of Salvation. Not a one time event, but "developing a new attachment to God", the incredible journey of a lifetime.
Renovated explores this journey, the brain science behind it, and proposes a compelling new model for the church.
The "Don't Miss the Main Thing" Podcast is a great reminder
Other Great Books/Resources
- John Elderedge’s message on Hearing God Speak. This gives a good theological foundation for hearing Him speak. Signup is free.
- Renovated is dense, but John Elderedge released a book recently called "Resilient". He quotes Renovated in it, and actually wrote the back jacket recommendation for Renovated. There's actually an app that has a 28 day devotional that is really good on developing intimacy, may be better than the book. It's embedded within the Wild at Heart Pause app which is a really devotional good too.
- Beautiful Outlaw - Amazing book that helps you see Jesus in a new, freeing, and refreshing way.
- The Life Model/Jim Wilder. Jim is the Neurotheologist I mentioned. This talks about the lifelong journey of attachment throughout one's life. He's the one who actually wrote Renovated.
